Trained for Leadership, Excellence, and Doing Service: UP Alumni working for Freedom in the Philippines.

I was asked a question once by a friend who studied in an exclusive university just what is so darn different about UP education anyway….for all the lessons I learned in UP, it was unforgivable that I could not, at that time, verbalize the profoundness and depth of my UP education.

And today, I found an article that basically says what many UP students believe to be true about our UP education. Reading the article, now I realize my why I could not verbalize my thoughts on UP education.

UP education is NOT that profound afterall. The secret of UP education lies not in education as taught within the academic corridors but in the richness of the UP educational experience as a whole – an experience no other academic institution in the Philippines can match or offer. If asked once again what the hell is so special about the UP education? Now I have a ready answer: While other universities teach you how to top the bar and other professional exams, UP does not only teach and train you to be the best in your field but most importantly, it educates you about life.

I have thought of doing this as early as December last year. But so many things got in the way. But now, there is no stopping my sharing of the gems we always find at lunch time at 7B Amorsolo Street. Two days into the Philippines and I still do not have my voice back. Too much explaining in class did it last Tuesday I guess. Ishould have listened when somebody told me not to strain my voice and avoid cold drinks a few days back when signs are coming that my throat is going to give in to the tight schedule I had to meet in Europe.

Upon my arrival, I reckon that the future looks bleak for many Filipinos indeed. An increase in the public transportation fare greeted me in the headline of national dailies the morning I arrived. Pictures of anxious and hagggard looking commuters awaiting their turns to take the metro rail transit system are plastered on the front pages of the two leading dailies. Long queues at government rice stations are getting longer and are beginning to be a normal sight everywhere in Metro Manila. Things are bad and things are expected to turn for the worse indeed.

Anyhow, since I am conserving my energy, I am gonna passed up the opportunity to comment exhaustively on these issues. And so I am just gonna post a picture that basically says all about my stand on contraceptives — also one of the burning issues of the day. Hey, it is very funny too. The photo is courtesy of Mr. Brian Gonzales, the lord of Carlo Religioso Stiftung fur die Junge Frauen now based in Bangkok.

Arrived here in Munich via the Deutch Bahn yesterday before lunch where I was greeted by my friend Wendi at the platform. Munich station is very typical of the German Haupbanhof (or central station). These statations are usually housed in old building, which also makes them not only historical but very interesting to explore. I am only staying in Munich for two days so we deposited my luggage in the locker and set out to walk into the town…

Its been almost two weeks since I left the Philippines. A week in Development Education Summer School in the Netherlands rekindled my passion to do development work. The inspiration we all got from each other from participants coming from four corners of the world fuelled our imagination to do more and do better.
