Reading from the inscription about the Merlion at Singapore’s famous commercial-cultural district, the Esplanade, one cannot but help wonder how the myth described in the poem evaporated in the city-state’s hollow concrete jungle. Do not get me wrong, Singapore is as wonderful as it can be today with efficient transport system, clean and organized environment, affordable shopping, and good and reasonably-priced food. But perhaps it is the historian in me that seeks the missing connection between the Singapore of today and the Singapore of the past painted by the poem Ulysses by the Merlion. (more…)

It is our third day here in Penang (or Pinang to the locals), Malaysia. And how I love this island province-city of Malaysia!

I have never been to KL, so I am not sure if KL can offer or at least equal what Penang has — rich and delightful history centered on Chinese and Western influence, combination of old and new buildings, culture, and even people; unique food — indoors and outdoors; and lush greens combined with awesome by-the-bay view (And to think we did not even go to the hills).
