Whew! Just like the whales (Apology to the whales and whale lovers out there. I know whales are a lot more intelligent than Miss Fernandez but I cannot find any other suitable allegory at this time) in the open seas, the fat lady can sure make waves!!!
Alas, she may be the queen of her own open pit…I mean open seas, but she sure cannot withstand the tsunami of furor that came after when people got wind of the inverse proportionality of her physical size viz-a-viz her peanut-size intellect (or should I say, common sense?).
Hence, unlike the beloved whale sharks or butandings of Sorsogon, almost everybody (with the exception of her rich brat friends and relatives) would surely be happy if this whale lady becomes extinct with her writing that stinks like a dead whale. Below are supposed to be the two letters of apology by Malu Fernandez. I’m not sure about you guys, but I honestly believe the first one is more honest, sincere, and definitely to the tune of the real Malu Fernandez’ “ascerbic wit”. Read on.
Redux Statement from Malu Fernandez
on the OFW Controversy
I have lost weight from the vehement and heated response provoked by my article entitled ‘From Boracay to Greece!’ which came out in the June 2007 issue of People Asia. And for this I thank all of you.
To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds as hollow and shallow as I am after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world. I am deeply apologetic for my insensitivity and the offensive manner in which this article was written but I still maintain that OFWs are a bunch of rowdy stinkylinkies. I hear you all and I am properly rebuked. It was truly not my intention to malign hurt, or express prejudice against OFWs; I just needed to feel better after all the gastric surgeries proved unsuccessful and my self confidence needed a boost.
As the recent recipient and target of death threats from Mila, Lydia and Mang Tomas; hate blogs from Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul II; and deeply personal insults from Kuhol and Dagul, I now truly understand the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice disguised as humor and good writing. Our society is bound together by human chains of kindness and decency. I have failed to observe these because these are all alien to me. I am now reaping the consequences of my actions but I am still heartened by all this attention.
Any publicity-whether good or bad-is still publicity. It is my fervent hope that the lessons that I’ve learned are not lost on all those who through anonymous blogs, engaged in bigotry, discrimination, and hatred (against overweight, social climbing, remorseless, bigoted bitches for example). I just had a taste of my own medicine and frankly, it tastes better than Bangkok pills.
I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this although my favorite nephew Migz Zubiri’s handlers have written this letter for me since I am totally incapable of writing something with logic, compassion and diplomacy. To date I have submitted my resignation letters from the human race only to be informed that I need not to since I was not part of it in the first place.
